Notes - Obituary of Elisha S. Gibson
Old Settler Dead
E. S. Gibson, one of our well known residents and old time settlers, passed away Wednesday morning at 2 o'clock, after suffering from a stroke of paralysis since Thursday of last week.
He was born in the state of Indiana [note: some census records say Ohio] on February 23d, 1832, and died November 3d, 1909 [note: newspaper mistakenly has the year as 1906] , having reached the ripe age of 77 years, 8 months and 11 days. While still a small boy, he moved with his parents to Washington county [note: research says Washington township, Tazewell county] Illinois, where he spent the years of his boyhood and early manhood.
In July 1852, he married Miss [note: left out first name of Ann] Maria Lewis, who survives him. In this wedlock were born six children, three boys and three girls. These are George D. Gibson of Wenona, Ill., Mrs. T. A. Stillwell of Stanford Ill., Mrs. O. J. Henby of Cozad, Neb., Henry Gibson, who died in 1879, Robert G. Gibson of Nora, Neb. and Mrs. J. R. McKinney of Quinter, Kansas.
Mr. Gibson came to Nuckolls county, Neb., in 1878, and has made his home here ever since. Being thus one of the pioneers of the county, he was identified with its development as long as his health permitted.
Mr. Gibson was converted at the age of eighteen and as long as health permitted, was always active in religious work, especially in connection with the Presbyterian church of which he was a member until his death. He was an active Sunday School worker and for a time president of the Nuckolls County Association. His home was the center of Christian influence and the home of the pioneer preacher of the gospel in the region. Up to five years ago he was permitted to enjoy good health, but at that time he suffered from a partial stroke of paralysis, and while he recovered sufficiently to enable him to be about again, his health was in every way very much enfeebled and death came as a welcome release for a weary soul and body.
The funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 2 p.m. from the Presbyterian church at Ruskin. Rev. F. G. Knauer of Nelson will have charge of the service and interment will be in the cemetery at Ruskin.
