Borthwick Castle was built at the original site of Locherwart Castle in 1430 by Sir William Borthwick, 1st Lord of Borthwick. Borthwick Castle is one of the largest and best-preserved surviving medieval Scottish fortifications. It is located twelve miles (19 km) southeast of Edinburgh.
