    Walter Ashton Larkin was born on April 1, 1909 in West Union, Cass County, Missouri to parents, Clarence Ashton Larkin and Effie May Trekell Larkin. Siblings to follow were: Clarence Alburn, Alleyne Lowell "Speed", Laura Isabel, James Edwin, Leila Hope "Sissy" and Wilbur Clark "Bill".

    Walter married Hazel Olive Johnson of Creston Iowa. They had 3 children, Mary Elizabeth, Martha Hope, who died as an infant, and John Ashton. The marriage ended in divorce.

    On Valentine's Day, February 14, 1947, Walter met Desda Ruth Winterstein Lewis at a dance in Red Oak Iowa. She was a widow with four young children, Richard Wayne, Phyllis Ann, Barbara Dee and Marilyn Jean. On June 4, 1947, Walter & Desda married and moved their big family to Cleveland Missouri. Together they had three children: Ruth May, David Ray and Deborah Gail.

    Walter had spent most of his life in West Union then Cleveland Missouri before settling in Littleton, Colorado in January 1961 to work at the Martin-Marietta Company, as a Deluxe Tool Grinder.

    In Missouri, he worked in the agricultural chemicals business then as a tool grinder for Westinghouse in Kansas City.

    In the latter part of Walt's life, he turned his hobby of lawn care into a part-time business. He was a member of the South Suburban Christian Church in Littleton, Colorado.

    Desda Ruth Larkin, 74, of Grandview Missouri died June 14, 1991. She was born in Griswold Iowa and lived in Exira Iowa, Cleveland in Cass County Missouri and Littleton Colorado. She moved to Grandview in 1988. Mrs. Larkin was a member of the South Suburban Christian Church of Littleton.

    Desda married Harold Joseph Lewis of Elliott Iowa on August 30, 1934. From that marriage, she bore 4 children, Richard Wayne, Phyllis Ann, Barbara Dee and Marilyn Jean. Harold was killed during World War II in Italy in April 1945.

    She met Walter Ashton Larkin in Red Oak Iowa on Valentine's Day 1947. They were married on June 4, 1947. Walter had two children from a previous marriage, John Ashton and Mary Elizabeth. The combined family settled in Cleveland Missouri.

    Three children were added to this combined family, Ruth May, David Ray and Deborah Gail. The family moved from Cleveland Missouri to Littleton, Colorado on January 1, 1961.

    At the time of her death, Desda had 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

    Clarence Ashton Larkin, son of John Wesley Larkin & Isabel America (Snider) Larkin, was born December 22, 1872, two miles west of Peculiar Missouri and passed away June 9, a943 at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 16 days from burns received when his home was destroyed by fire in the early morning of June 8.

    At the time of his death, he was residing in Cleveland and was well known all over Cass County where he had lived his entire life with the exception of a few years in Kansas city as a young man.

    In 1898, he was united in marriage with Mary Mollie Knight. To this union was born one son, Arthur Wesley, who traveled to California alone at age 12 and settled in Los Angeles California.

    On February 29, 1908 he married Effie May Trekell, To this union was born five sons and two daughters: Walter Ashton, Clarence Alburn, Alleyne Lowell (Speed), James Edwin, Leila Hope and Wilbur Clark (Bill). Another daughter, Laura Isabelle, died at the age of 2 1/2.

    From Local Newspaper:

    A tragedy, such as seldom overtakes a community occurred early last Tuesday morning when Clarence Larkin was fatally burned when his home and possessions were completely destroyed by fire. The origin of the fire was not known and Mr. Larkin suffered most severe burns about his body before he was awakened and able to leave the burning building. Although his clothing was almost completely burned off, and he was suffering intense pain, he walked 2.5 miles to the home of his son, Walter A. Larkin, where a physician was called. First aid was administered and he was immediately removed to the University of Kansas Hospital where he passed away early Wednesday morning.

    Note: His Grandson, John Ashton Larkin, 7 years old at the time of his grandpa's death recalls that he could see the flames of the house fire in the distance out the window of the family home and after his Grandpa was taken to the hospital, the couch where he had been lying was still smoking.
