WILLIAM McCLANAHAN was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He married *MARTHA SMITH, daughter of *PETER SMITH. Early records state "their son (Thomas and Dorothy's), William, married into a prominent Smith family, and their grandsons married well." The date of Martha and William's birth cannot be pinpointed from the estimates given by other researchers. The only dates that can be certain are the dates their wills were written and entered into probate proceedings.
William and Martha's children were Thomas, *Peter, William, James, Martha and John. Notes:
THOMAS McCLANAHAN was born about 1616. A book detailing his descendants says
that he was born in what later became Westmoreland County, Virginia. He certainly was
among the very earliest settlers in America, being here before the Mayflower docked at
Plymouth. Thomas married *DOROTHY MOONEY who was born about 1620. Their
family lived in Virginia's Northumberland and Westmoreland Counties. In 1683,
Thomas's will was probated and in the will he bequeathed items to his wife, his son
*WILLIAM, and several daughters, unnamed.
In the court records of
Old Jamestown in 1673/74 is the following mention - "Our well beloved friend, John
McClanahan, of the city of Londonderry, Merchant, and Master of a vessell". During this
time, ships arrived and departed at a rapid rate bringing people and supplies and returning
to England and Ireland with tobacco cargoes. Thomas and Dorothy must have been of an
upper class people since both could read and write, in a day when most could not. Thomas
was closely related to Nathaniel McClanahan, the shipping man of Princess Anne County,
Virginia who died in 1711, leaving an adult family and mentioning a brother, David, who
had died in Strabine, Ireland. Strabine is located just below Londonderry. After Thomas
