    Walter Wayne Thompson was born 20 April 1879 in Randolph County, Missouri. On 12 January 1902 he married Anna Bell Hicks, daughter of John Wilmer Hicks and Mattie Nora Hughes. Anna Bell was born 29 August 1881 at Mike, Missouri. They lived most of their lives in Chariton and Linn Counties in Missouri. They were farmers, but moved to Marceline, Missouri in later years.

    Anna Bell passed away on 21 March 1960 at the age of 78 years. Walter Wayne passed away on Sunday, 3 July, 1966 t Florence Rest Home in Marceline, Missouri. They were both buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Marceline, Missouri.

    They were the parents of 10 children: Opal Esther, Raymond Earl, Mattie Lucille, Walter Howard, Eugenia Maxine, Virgil Lee, Walter Wayne Jr and Ada Belle. There was also 2 infant children who died at birth, a daughter who died on 23 September 1902 and a son who died 12 April 1906. Both infant children are buried in Locke Cemetery, Chariton County, Missouri, southeast of Marceline.

    Notes:

    William David Thompson was born 28 February 1852 in Randolph County, Missouri. He married Lydia Esther Runyen on 18 October 1875. Lydia was born 31 March 1853 in Lawrence, Dearborn, Indiana. She was the daughter of Robert Runyen and Elizabeth Ann Gibson.

    They lived their early married life in Randolph County from approximately 1875 to 1879. They then moved to Lamar in Barton County, Missouri. Lydia's parents also lived in Lamar. In 1886 they moved to Chariton County, Missouri. They owned land in Westville community southeast of Marceline, Missouri. They raised cattle and other crops. William was also a carpenter and worked on the World's Fair building in St. Louis.

    William was in one of the Oklahoma Land Rushes, not sure which one for sure, but I did find a William Thompson listed in the 22 April 1889 rush, which gave birth to Stillwater, OK. I found William living in Stillwater City, Oklahoma in 1900 with two of his children, John and Wayne.

    William bought some property in Payne County, OK on 12/15/1898 from Frederick Scott for $1000.00 and sold the same property for $2400.00 to William Hodges on 4/15/1904. I was told that when William sold the property, it caused some sort or rift in the family. No one alive knows the details.

    Lydia Esther died of cancer at the Christian Church Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri on 23 April 1924. She was buried at Locke Cemetery, southeast of Marceline, near Mike, Missouri on 26 April 1924.

    William David died of pneumonia on 6 May 1927 and was buried 8 May 1927 in Locke Cemetery also.

    Notes:

    John Wilmer Hicks was born near Richmond, Virginia June 1 1848.

    He Enlisted in the service during the Civil War when he was 15 years old, taking his fathers place. He served for two years with a Virginia outfit under General Lee and took part in many battles of the war.

    He came to Missouri with his parents in 1868.He received his education in a log school house and had always lived on a farm.

    On March 21, 1869, he married Mattie Nora Hughes of Randolph, Missouri, at the residence of Robert Turner (her stepfather) by Elder James Bradley. Mattie was born October 14, 1848 near Thomas Hill and was the only child of Fleming and Mary A (Hicks) Hughes. Fleming and Mary A were married December 28, 1847. Fleming was born in Virginia and was among the earliest settlers of Chariton County, Missouri. He was a painter and a decorator by trade and lived at Glasgow untill after his marriage to Mary. Mattie's father died around 1848/1849 and is buried in Brunswick City Cemetery at Brunswick, Missouri (I was told, but I looked through that whole cemetery and found no headstone for him, nor any record at the city hall). Mary later married Robert M Turner and they had ten children together.

    After eight years of renting land, John bought a farm in Musselfork township. He raised shorthorn cattle, Poland China hogs, horses and mules. Mattie raised white leghorn chickens.

    John died March 8, 1927 at his home (where he had lived for 50 years) in Chariton County, Missouri at the age of 78. Mattie died June 29, 1929 at the home of a nephew, Will Turner, near Prairie Hill, Missouri.

    John W. Hicks, a pioneer settler, died at his home near Pat, Mo., Tuesday, aged 78 years, 9 months and 7 days. Funeral services were conducted at White Oak church, Thursday afternoon. Interment at Locke Cemetery.

    THE PASSING OF J.W. HICKS

    J.W. Hicks passed away on Tuesday morning, March 8, 1927, at his home twelve miles north of Keytesville, where he had lived for fifty years.

    He had been in failing health the past two years.

    J.W. Hicks was the son of Josiah and Dreucilla Hicks and was born near Richmond, Virginia, June 1, 1848. He came to Missouri in the year of 1858. He served in the war at the age of 15 years under General Lee.

    He was united in marriage to Mattie Hughes, March 21, 1869. To their union ten children were born, all of whom are living except two who passed away several years ago, leaving to mourn his departure, his widow the eight children, 30 grand children and 16 great grand children.

    Those of the immediate family are Wallace, of the home address, Bruce of Marceline, Mrs. Willis Ball, Dunegan, Mo.; Mrs. Babe Grubbs, Musselfork, Mo.; Mrs. Wayne Thompson, and Robert both of Marceline, and George of Des Moines, Iowa.

    Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Sears, March 10th at White Oak church, and in the presence of a large crowd of friends and loved ones he was laid to rest in the Locke Cemetery.

    MRS. MATTIE HICKS DIES LAST SATURDAY

    Mrs. Mattie Hicks died June 29, at the home of her nephew, Will Turner near Prairie Hill, Mo. She was 80 years, 8 months and 16 days old. She was born October 14, 1849 near Thomas Hill, Mo. She was the daughter of Robert and Mary Hughes. In 1870 she married John W. Hicks, who died two years ago. To this union was born ten children, all except three are living. The living are Mrs. Melissa Coy, Marceline, Mo.; Mrs. Addie Grubbs, Musselfork; Mrs. Anna Thompson, Rothville; Bruce Hicks, Robert Hicks, Marceline; George Hicks, Des Moines, Iowa. She also leaves 31 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. The Rev. H. H. McLeod was in charge of the funeral Sunday. Burial was in the White Oak (Locke) cemetery.

    Notes:

    William Laffayette (or Laffeete) Thompson was born April 2, 1827 in Virginia. On 28 June 1849 he married Nancy Elizabeth Johnston, daughter of Robert C. Johnston and Mary Ann Prewitt. Nancy was born May 1828 near Columbia, Boone County, Missouri.

    Nancy passed away on August 26, 1882 and is buried in Roanoke Cemetery, Roanoke, Missouri.

    William remarried after the death of Nancy to Georgeann Padgett on 9 April 1885. William was 58 and Georgeann was under 18 (according to the marriage license). They had a son, Charles (Charlie) Thompson. William and Georgeann divorced and she remarried.

    William then remarried a third time to Ada Mott. They were married 23 May 1894. William was 67 and she was 19. They had three children: William Joseph (Joe), Margaret Louisa and Morgan. William and Ada divorced in October 1911. She died in 1928 and is buried in Roanoke Cemetery at Roanoke, Missouri.

    From history handed down, William L Thompson owned land near Roanoke, Missouri in Randolph County and was considered financially well-to-do. He died 27 June 1912 at 9:30 am of sunstroke. He is also buried in Roanoke Cemetery.

    Will of William L. Thompson

    I, William L. Thompson, of Roanoke, Missouri, being of sound mind and disposing memory, over the age of twenty one year’s do make, publish and declare this to be my last will, hereby expressly revoking all former Wills by me at any time made.

    1st, I will and direct that my body be buried in the cemetery at Roanoke, Missouri, but leave all the details to those who survive me.

    2nd, I will and direct that all my just debts including funeral expenses of last sickness, be paid by my executor, hereinafter named, as soon as the same may be conveniently done after my decease.

    3rd, In consideration of the kindness, care and attention bestowed upon me by my daughter, Martha A. Powell since the first of October 1910, I will and direct that she be paid a reasonable compensation for such service, provided she shall make any charge therefore, unless I shall settle with her before my decease and take a receipt from her for such services.

    4th, To my son, Joe Thompson, I give and bequeath the sum of One Dollar.

    5th, To my daughter, Louisa Thompson, I give and bequeath the sum of One Hundred Dollars.

    6th, All the rest and residue of my property left after the payment of my debts and the bequests above named, I give, devise and bequeath to my children, William David Thompson, James Mosby Thompson, Martha Ann Powell, Mary Elizabeth Powell and Charles Thompson, in equal portions, share and share alike, in fee simple forever.

    7th, I hereby nominate and appoint my friend James L.     Robert and Elizabeth Ann (Gibson) Runyen had four children :
    John, Lydia Esther, Fannie Belle and Charles F.

    The family lived in Lawrenceburg, Indiana prior to moving to Missouri.

    Robert went to the gold fields during the gold strike in 1849, but came home broke as he did not strike it rich.

    Robert belonged to the Lamar, Missouri Lodge #183.

    In 1898 Robert became blind, so he and Elizabeth entered the Odd Fellows Home at Liberty, Missouri where they lived untill their deaths.

    Elizabeth Ann passed away May 18, 1904 at the gae of 77. Robert passed away September 18, 1907 at the age of 80 at 9:45am. They are both buried in Home Cemetery of the Odd Fellows Home in Liberty, Missouri. She is in Row 8, Lot 11 and he is in Row 8 Lot 12.

    Notes:

    Joshiah H Hicks (Uncle Joe, as he was familiarly called) was a native of Richmond, Virginia. He married Drucilla Medow, also a Richmond native. They came to Missouri in 1868 and settled in Howard County, later moving to Chariton County, where they settled on a farm in Musselfork township.

    Josiah was an overseer of slaves and saw that they were properly cared for. He never enlisted in the Army during the Civil War, but his sympathies were with the south and many a sick and weary Confederate soldier found refuge in his home. He was a Democrat, a member of the Baptist Church and belonged to the Masonic Lodge.

    Drucilla died in 1884.
