    News & Echoes
    January 1991

    By Bruce A. Baker

With Mothers Day approaching I thought that I would send some information on a maternal line in memory of the mothers of the Flynt family. Perry Flynt son of John and Catherine Flynt married December 29, 1706 (FHL975.664 V25u) Martha Halbert.

Martha Halbert was the daughter of John Halbert and Margaret Hampton. John Halbert Sr. born Abt 1741 in Caroline County Virginia was the first child of Joel Halbert Sr. and Elizabeth Francis Jones. John Halbert enlisted March 1, 1777 in the Virginia Regt. and was last on the rolls dated April 6, 1778 at Valley Forge, Pa. He moved to Tennessee possibly about 1811and died about 1820 in Lincoln County Tennessee. Margaret Hampton was the daughter of James Hampton. In James Hampton's will (FHLF#1579656) he not only mentions his daughter Margaret Halbert, but land adjoining Thos. Flynt and witnesses Martin Flynt and Hasten Flynt.

Joel Halbert Sr. was son of William Halbert and Mary the widow of Thomas Wood (Essex County Virginia Will Book 6 for Wm. Halbert and Mary Taylor and Deeds and Wills No. 13 for administration of estate of Thomas Wood). William was married before February 10, 1709 and was dead before October 18, 1718. Mary remarried to William Taylor. Joel Halbert Sr.'s wife Francis Jones is reported by Boddie in Historical Families Vol IX pp.193-4 to be the daughter of John Jones and Frances Randolph, however, I have located no proof.

Margaret Hampton's father James Hampton is possibly the James Hampton that is the son of John Hampton Jr. and Margaret Wade. John Hampton Jr.'s line goes back through William Hampton into England.
[NI0305] Calvin Tarpley Flynt died of a gun shot would in New Orleans during the Civil War. On the 8th of March 1864, his wife Mary Wilson Flynt had given birth to a new son, Named for his father Calvin T. Flynt. The child lived 13 days and died on 21 March 1864. On the 30th of April 1864, Mary age 25, who was living in Hopkinsville, Gonzales County, Texas died leaving two sons Joe Halbert Flynt, age 7 and John M. Flynt, age 4. On the 23rd of May 1864, Calvin Tarpley was killed. Oney Percilla Flynt, sister to Calvin Tarpley, and her husband Dr. Milam Howell of Belmont, Gonzales County, Texas, did not have children and they took the orphan sons and reared them to manhood.
[NI0919] This could be Catherine Perry or some other Catherine/Katerine.

Catherine's maiden name may have been "Meredith" but that cannot be proven. If one examines the sequence of the naming of John's and Catherine's children, the pattern commonly used in those days would lead to the mother's maiden name of Meredith.

Deed in Surry Co, NC in 1770 from James Hampton of Rowan Co, NC to John Halbert of same Co, for land in Rowan Co, NC
John Halbert, first child of Joel Halbert and Elizabeth Frances Jones, was born 1741 in Caroline Co., Va., and died about 1820, in Lincoln Co., Tn. as his will and estate was settled Jul 22, 1821. It has been stated that John married Peggy Hill, but no record has been found to support this theory. John was married first to Mary Margaret Hampton about 1770, probably in Rowan Co., NC. Mary Margaret was born 1746, Fairfax Co., Va.

In 1783 John Halbert was living on Town Fork and paid taxes on 234 acres of land, a negro girl named Rachel, four horses and six cattle. In 1789 Surrey Co. NC. was divided into Surrey Co. and Stokes Co. and the old county buildings being no longer suitably located for either county, John was commissioned to sell them. About this time he was also appointed one of the commissioners to lay out the town of Germantown which was to be the new county seat for Stokes County, NC.

John served in the Revolutionary War as a Corp. in Captain Rice's Co., 11th Virginia Regt. Commanded by Colonel Daniel Morgan. He enlisted Mar 1, 1777 and his name is last found on the rolls dated Apr 6, 1778 at Valley Forge, Pa. which showed him absent on sick leave. It is believed that John first went to Tn. in 1811.

John married Margaret Hampton 1770, Rowan, North Carolina, USA. Margaret (daughter of James Hampton, Sr and Martha Smith) was born 1746, Fairfax, Virginia, USA; died 1828, Lincoln, Tennessee, USA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 7.  Margaret Hampton was born 1746, Fairfax, Virginia, USA (daughter of James Hampton, Sr and Martha Smith); died 1828, Lincoln, Tennessee, USA.

    Notes:

Margaret was the daughter of James Hampton, born Sep 3, 1723, New Kent Co., Va., and died 1801, Surry Co., NC. and Martha Mary Smith, born ca. 1725, Fairfax Co., Va., and died before 1796, Stokes Co., NC. She was the daughter of William Smith, who deeded 150 acres to John Halbert in Surry Co., NC. in 1771 which stated, "For the great love I bare him." The parents of James Hampton were John Hampton II, born Jun 3, 1683, Hampfield, Gloucester Co., Va. and died Jan 18, 1747, Fairfax Co., Va. and Margaret Wade, born May 1, 1694, New Kent Co., Va., and died May 17, 1773, Fairfax Co., Va. The parents of John Hampton II were Captain John Hampton I, born 1650, York Co., Va., and died Nov 10, 1718, King William Co., Va. and Mary Mann, born 1652, Timberneck, Gloucester Co., Va., and died 1688, Gloucester Co., Va. Margaret's parents were James Wade, born before 1680, and died after 1700, New Kent Co., Va. Mary Hampton, born before 1681, Hampfield, Gloucester Co., Va. and died after 1700, New Kent Co., Va. John Hampton's father was Thomas Hampton, born Apr 16, 1623, Hampfield, Gloucester Co., Va., amd died 1690, James City, Va. Wade Hampton, the famous General of the Revolutionary War, was the son of James Hampton's brother, Anthony, and the cousin of Mary Margaret Hampton Halbert.

Margaret Halbert died in 1828 when her estate was administered by her son James. It is believed that John and Margaret are buried in the cemetery in or near Pearl City where they first lived in Tn. Pearl City is located a few miles down stream on the Elk River below Fayetteville, in Lincoln Co., Tn.

--Bruce A. Baker, in News & Echoes (January 1991), http://members.tripod.com/flyntdata/html/

That Joel Halbert I, (ca 1712) of Essex County, Virginia was married and had two daughters before he married Frances Jones, is certain.

    Several documents substantiate this fact.

For instance, in the will of Mary Wood Halbert Taylor,[1] mother of Joel Halbert, she mentions a granddaughter, Sarah Halbert. This will was dated April 9, 1737 and was probated June 21, 1737. Her sons, Joel and William are named executors. Joel's daughter Mary apparently was not yet born, as she was not mentioned in her grandmother's will.

Further proof that Joel was married and father of two daughters, Sarah and Mary, is found in several documents pertaining to land inherited by his two daughters as heirs of John Cook(e) of Essex Co., Virginia.

Found in Order Book 1754-1757 of Essex County, pages 46, 176 and 266

In which Sarah and Mary Halbert by Joel Halbert, "their nearest friend" bring suit of "ejectment: in order to take title to the above-mentioned land. These documents are dated 1753. Sarah and Mary are referred to as "infants under the age of 21," indicating that they were both born after 1732.[2]

Look for more under John Cooke page

Old Rappahannock & Essex County marriages -Book D27, page 71list their marriage date as 1750. This makes two possibilities, either the 1750 date is the second marriage of Joel to Mary or the date has been transcribed wrong. Due to the fact that there is good evidence that Sarah was indeed the daughter of Joel & Mary, with a brother named William based on at least two recorded documents:

Manuscript - Joel Halbert & His Descendents by Florence Pearl Huey & Kenneth Waddell- 1947, P. 22, P. 106 of King & Queen County, Virginia records copied by the DAR as Vol. 27 notes that a bond of 500 Pounds was furnished October 20, 1754 by James Charles of Caroline County and William Halbert & John Motley of Essex County to Theopolis Faver of Essex County to guarantee a deed dated 1754. Reference is made to the daughters of Joel Halbert, namely Sarah wife of James Charles. Land was on Occupacia Creek. List John Cook as their Grandfather and that John Motley was a grandson.

Manuscript - Joel Halbert & His Descendents by Florence Pearl Huey &Kenneth Waddell - 1947, P. 22, States the Cook Plantation was divided with 81 acres going to John Motley, Son of William & Hannah (Cook) Motley, and 81 acres going to Sarah (Halbert) Charles, wife of James Charles and her sister Mary Halbert.
