    Note: Robert Hammock not listed previously as a son of Ben edict, Sr. , owns land of the same location as Benedict Ham mock (Sr. or JR.). Lewis Hammock is a witness to Benedic t SR.'s deed to his son John Hammock. (Lewis and Robert ar e of the same branch, with forenames as a clue). One Joh n Hammock was a soldier in Colonial Virginia Militia from A melia County..

    "Robert HAMMOCK, born 1737, received a grant of 920 acres o n Little River in Wilkes County on June 6, 1785. This lan d was bounded by Thomas and William LEVERITT and William WA LKER. On the same day and bounded also by the Leveritt's , John HAMMOCK had land granted to him. The latter was rec orded July 1, 1795. (Evidence points to Robert and John HA MMOCK, Sr. as brothers. Both possessed land on Little Rive r).

    Robert HAMMOCK, Sr., died in Wilkes County and his will i s fortunately preserved. he devises to
    1. "Wife, Millenor, whole of land I possess.
    2. Milly BENTLEY 16.00 her lawful claim against the estate.
    3. To my first son (not named) the platation where he live s.
    4. To second son, Robert, 100 acres adjoining his brother s Lewis' and McFarlane.
    5. To third son, Joshua, 100 acres adjoining his brother R obert, and Perry's survey.
    6. To forth and fifth sons, John and ____, 200 acres in th e Stewart survey.

    Edward JACKSON and Abigail , his wife, of Amelia County, Vi rginia, deed to Robert Hammock and Milley, his wife in cons ideration of "natural affection and love for son-in-law an d his wife, and 5 shillings," 81 acres in Amelia County, ad jacent Little Harricane {Swamp} and creek. Wits: John Baile y, Charnel Hightower, Benjamin Bridgeforth and Charles Conn ally. Amelia County, Virginia, Deed Book 11, p. 125. Date d 23 May 1770.

    In 19 Oct 1789: Edward Jackson wrote his will in Nottoway C o. VA. (Edward Jackson's property in Amelia was cut off int o Nottoway Co. in the late 1780s. The early records of Nott oway Co were destroyed, and this will comes from the Revolu tionary War Pension Applicatoin of Mrs Jane Bailey Jackson , widow of John E Jackson, son of Edward Jackson)

    In the name of God, Amen. I Robert Hammock (Senior) of th e county of Wilkes and State of Georgia planter; being sic k and weak of Body but of perfect understanding. calling t o mind the mortality of my body do make and ordain this m y last Will and Testament;

    First I give my body to the Earth to be buried in a decen t manner and my Soul I give into the hands of almighty Go d my merciful Creator and as touching such worldly Estate w herewith it has Pleased God to bless me in this life, I d o hereby give, Bequeath, and devise in manner and form foll owing that is to say.

    First I give and Bequeath unto my Dearly Beloved Wife, Mile nor the whole of the Land which is cleared on the several T racts I now possess during her life (that she may be able t o raise the children that are yet under age in a creditabl e and Decent manner) Except such plantations that may herea fter be mentioned whereon any of my Children are settled. L ikewise I leave her the whole of my livestock and moveabl e effects during her life unless She sees a cause hereafte r to assist her Daughters; In that case I leave to her ow n Discretion and her Death the whole of the said moveable E ffects as well as Live Stock of all Kinds as household furn iture Plantation Tools and Instruments are to be equally di vided among her to the only use and Behoof of them & thei r Heirs forever.

    Also I give and bequeath unto MILLY BENTLEY [wife of Danie l Bentley] or her heirs Sixteen Lawfull Dollars which is t o be considered as the whole of her claim against the Estat e.

    Also I leave unto Lewis my first son, in consideration of h is paying the Estate before hand thirty silver Dollars, on e hundred acres of land to him and his heirs forever to Inc lude the Plantation whereon he is now Living.

    Also to Robert my Second Son I leave one hundred acres of L and adjoining to his brother Lewis and MacFarline's to th e use and Behoof of him and his heirs forever.

    Also I give and Bequeath unto my third son Joshua and his h eirs forever one hundred Acres of Land to join his Brothe r and Perry's Survey and where as the said Joshua has grea t at Trouble in clearing a plantation where and Lewis are n ow settled. He is at full liberty to make another Crop in t he field he had cleared on Lewis's Land rent free likewis e the Land that he has cleared on that side of the Creek wh ere he now lives. He has the privaledge of tending rent fre e till he has it in his own (struck through) power to clea r a Plantation on his own Tract;

    Likewise I give and Bequeath unto my fourth and fifth son s John and William two hundred acres of Land in the Stewart 's Survey to be equally Divided between them to the only us e and Behoof of them and their heirs forever.
    Also I leave to my sixth son Edward two hundred Acres of La nd to include the dwelling House and Plantation where I no w live to him and his heirs forever; the remaining (sic) fi fty-eight acres in my survey including the remaining twenty -five acres in Stewart's Survey in all Eighty three acres m ore or less.

    I give and Bequeath unto my youngest Daughter Katey, and he r heirs forever in making a Division of said Land as afores aid it is to be observed that when any of the cleared Lan d which I now hold in my Tenure should belong to the Tract s I have issued out as aforesaid. yet my wife is not to b e disturbed in the welfare of the same Rent free During he r natural life but is to Enjoy the produce of the same unmo lested neither are any of my Sons allowed to sell or Dispos e of their Land which they may receive of me during my lif e without my leave and after my Death they are to give th e refusal of their part to one another that it may remain i n the family. The Money arising from Debts is to be equall y Divided among my wife and Daughters as well as the whol e of my moveable Effects as aforesaid at her death.

    And I do hereby gratify and afirm this to be my Last will a nd Testament, whereby Disallowing all other Wills here to f ore mentioned. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my ha nd and Seal this ninth day of July One Thousand Seven hundr ed and ninety nine and in the twenty fourth year of America n Independence.

    I give to my loving wife Ann the land I now live on durin g her natural life. I give to my loving wife my negroe woma n Manray and negroe child James. I give to my loving wife m y desk and trunk that stands upon it, two of my best Beds a nd furniture, my large chest and lick and key, one of my be st Butter potts and Cream pott and my two earthern plates a nd mug and Spice morter and pestle, half of the stock of Ca ttle and hogs, half of all my pewter and mywarming pan an d my Box iron and heaters, my horse and her Saddle and my t wo leather charirs and my large table and looking Glass, al l these things, I do give to my loving wife to do as she th inks proper at my death.

    I give to my Son Benedict HAMMACK all my land that I now ho ld at my wife's death, my negro man Joshua at my wife's dea h to him and his heirs forever.
    I give to my Son Lewis HAMMACK my negro man solomon at my W ife's death.
    I give to my daughter Rayne SAMFORD my negro woman Winney a t my wife's death, and at my daughter Rayne Samford's death , I give my negro Winney to my Grandson William SAMFORD.
    I give to my daughter Nancy JESPER my negro child Lucy.
    I give to my daughter Christen JONES my negro child Milly.

    "WILLIAM HAMMACK a "cooper", and Christian, his wife, wer e granted 161 acres of land in Yeocomico forest, in Old Rap pahannock County. Virginia, also 3000 acres in Farnham Pari sh, March 3, 1672, and is designated as the "olest settler " there. We do not know the date of his arrival in Virgini a from England, but it probably was not long before the dat e of the Land Grant. On January 1, 1699, Lady Culpepper an d Lord and Lady Fairfax sold to him some land in nearby "No rthern Neck," and he aquired other lands in Westmoreland Co unty, "adjoining Robert MIDDLETON," belieed to have been hi s father-in-law."

I give to my son Benedict Hammock my land where I no w live, after the death of my wife, to him and the heirs o f his body lawfully begotten and for want of sure heirs t o my son Robert Hammock and the heirs of his Body lawfull y Begotton and fro want of sure heirs to the next heir of l aw.

    Called "the Elder" since his father had two sons named Will iam. When William Hammack acquired a title in 1656, it evid ently was to clear title to the land on which his father ha d settled some 21 years before, and William thus became th e "first settler" in Yeocomico Forest.     appeared in America during the period 16-1700,
