    Notes:

Lord William Johnstone fought a duel September 4, 1720, with Captain Roe (or Poe) of the Foot Guards. He killed Captain Roe and then fled to America, locating near Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1723. Here he married Anna Chew of Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

The story which many believe is that Lord William Johnstone killed his adversary and then fled to Virginia from England where he married Ann Chew. Another story is that William himself was wounded in the duel and died the following December (according to a Dr. Jean Stephenson, a genealogist, of Washington, D.C) She said she has seen the grave in Westminster Abbey, but she had no way of knowing whose body was in the grave, if any at all. William's mother could have gone to great lengths to hide the fact that her son survived. The story has been given little credit by many who should know. And yet, it is persistent in all branches of the family, although the different branches have been separated for over 200 years. Several descendants of William and Anna (Chew) Johnstone wrote in their family bibles that William was the son of the 1st Marquess of Annandale.

I myself believe William Johnstone did come to Virginia in 1723 as family stories going all the way back to the 1700's seem to back this up.

William married Anna Maria Chew 12 Oct 1723, Spotsylvania, Virginia, USA. Anna (daughter of Burgess Larkin Chew and Hanna Roy) was born 1703, Caroline, Virginia, USA; died 2 Nov 1742, Port Royal, Caroline, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet]
