Notes - Azariah was the younger of two sons of Jeremy Mathews, a farmer and a carpenter, and Huldah Ann Burroughs Mathews. He was probably named after his paternal grandfather, Azariah H. Mathews.
Azariah married Lillian Rake Mathews on Nov. 2, 1881. They had three children: Velma M. in 1882, Alfred Rake in 1893 and Harold A. in 1897.
His childhood home was Ewing Twp., Mercer Co., New Jersey, but he lived as an adult in Lambertville, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey; Pennington, Mercer Co.; and Jersey City and Bayonne, both in Hudson Co., New Jersey. He was a carpenter, a freight car inspector, and later a railroad foreman.
