- James Halbert, first son of William and Mary Halbert was born about 1740, Essex Co., Va. and
died before May 7, 1819, Tappahanock, Virginia, when his will was probated. His will was dated, Dec 11, 1811, and was probated May 7, 1819,Tappahanock, Virginial. He married Sarah Shaddock, ca. 1782, Essex Co., Va. She was born about 1750, Essex Co., Va.,and died after Jul 30, 1823, Tappahanock, Virginia
Her parents were James Shaddock, born about 1715, Essex Co., Va., and died 1795, Essex Co., Va. and Hannah Samuel, born 1741, Essex Co., Va., and died after 1795, Essex Co., Va. Hannah's parents were James Samuel, born about 1715, Essex Co., Va., and May 10, 1759, Essex Co., Va. and Sarah Boulware, born 1739, Essex Co., Va., and died after 1759, Essex Co., Va. James served in the Rev. War in Va.
In the Deed Book of 1794, James Halbert buys 134 acres of land from James and Hannah Shaddock, James Shaddock, Jr., and Catherine, his wife. There is also a deed, of Oct 15, 1795, "between James Shaddock, Jr. and wife Catherine, of Caroline, Virginia, USA and James Halbert, of Essex Co., VA, a certain tract of land in Essex Co., VA, fifty-four acres, being the land which Avarilla Samuel, deceased, devised in her last will and testament should be equally divided between James Shaddock and John Halbert, a son of the said James Halbert.
James Halbert made his will Dec 4, 1831 and it was proved on May 17, 1819. He gave to his son, William Halbert and daughter Mary Goldman, three Negroes, to them and their heirs. To his wife, Sally, all of his estate, both real and personable, during her lifetime; after her death to be given to his five sons, John, James, Thomas, Anthony and Lewis

being in my proper sences do make and ordian this my last Will and Testament
in Manner and as followeth Vt
Item I give to my son William Halbert and my daughter Mary Goldman three Negrose Vt Cloe, Harry and Will to them their heirs forever to be equally divided beteeen them
Item I tend my belove wife Sally Halbert all the rest and balance of my estate both reald and personal estate during her natural life after her death I give to my five sons Vt John Halbert, James Halbert, Thomas Halbert, Anthony Halbert & Lewis Halbert to them and their heirs forever to be equally divided between them. and lastley I appointed my two sons John and James Halbert to be my excutors to this my last will.
