Another Pioneer Fallen
The venerable Henry Houser died at the residence of his son-in-law, Daniel Kneisly, in Wayne township, in this county on Sunday morning, Mr. Houser was born July 18th 1788, in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He was married at an early age to Miss Magdalena Neff, and he soon afterwards- accompanied by his father, who made his home with him- emigrated to this county and settled upon the banks of the Great Miami River, about three miles north of Dayton about the year 1806. He was one of the first settlers in the county. In the vicinity of this city. Five brothers and two sisters also emigrated here from the Shenandoah Valley, and settled in the Miami Valley. After living about twelve years on the farm he opened on the banks of the Miami. Henry Houser removed to Miami county and permanently settled down on a farm in the vicinity of Piqua, where he lived forty-nine years. During his residence in Miami county, his wife died, and was buried in the Piqua Cemetery. About four years ago Mr. Houser returned to this county and made his home with his son-in-law. Mr. Daniel Kneisly, and he resided there until his death. The father and grandfather of the subject of this brief sketch also died on the 2nd day of February- a rather singular coincidence. His father was aged eighty years and a few days over a month, when he died and only about a week older than his son Henry, when he died. The wife of the deceased was nearly sixty-six years old when she died and she had been married about forty-six years they had seven children-six daughters and one son. The father survived two of his daughters. Those living are Mrs. Catharine Kneisly, Mrs. Rebecca Hathaway, Mrs. Czarina Reed, Miss Elizabeth Houser, and Aaron Houser.
Mr. Houser was always greatly esteemed by his acquaintances, and although, he was ever a prominent man in his neighborhood, he never aspired to public position and refused to hold office. His remains will be interred in the Piqua Cemetery today. Being widely known and greatly respected, doubtless a large concourse of citizen will attend his funeral both from Wayne township, and from the vicinity of his old home near Piqua; but of all the number, there will be few who came to this Valley at as early a day as the deceased.

Aaron N. Houser
A Tribute To Aaron N. Houser Who Was Called to His Reward
After a Well Spent Life
Aaron N. Houser was born on the old homestead in Miami Co., Ohio, January 27, 1826, and passed peacefully away at the home of his son Franklin Houser, January 26, 1899, aged 72 years 11 months and 29 days.
When in youth he gave his heart to God and was one of the charter members of the Bethel Methodist Church, and ever since that time has lived a true christian life.
In the year 1852 he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza A. Inskeep, with whom he shared the joys and sorrows of life for nearly a half century. To this union was born six sons and one daughter, all of whom are left to morn the loss of a loving father.
In the year 1866 he organized the first Sabbath School held in Bethel church and was elected Superintendent, and, with the exception of a few years has since held that office, and discharged his duty faithfully. For over thirty years he went in and out before us as leader of our Class, and also very faithfully held the different offices of the Church.
For the last three years disease had disabled him to such an extent, that he was not permitted to regularly meet with us in public worship.
At times he was a great sufferer but bore it all patiently and never was heard to murmur or complain. He was often heard to say "Only waiting until the Master calls." On Thursday morn at early dawn, the summons came, and his spirit took its flight to that "sun bright clime," of which he so often sang, there to dwell with his loved companion who preceded him a few short months ago.
Those weary limbs are now at rest, those lips which spoke words of comfort are silent, yet although he be asleep his works will follow him, and ever dwell in the hearts of those who have been associated with him in the work for the Master.
Servant of God well done
Thy glorious warfare past,
The battle fought, the race is won,
And thou art crowned at last.

1900 Miami County Biography
Levi Houser, now deceased, was born in Spring Creek township May 20, 1823, and upon the old homestead farm remained until twenty years of age. He was reared to agricultural pursuits, and on leaving the parental roof he went to Dayton, where he worked on a farm with his uncle for two years. On the expiration of that period, with the capital which he had acquired through his industry and economy, he purchased eighty acres of land in Spring Creek township, and from that time forward made his home upon the property. In addition to the cultivation of the fields he purchased cattle and sheep, and was numbered among the extensive and successful stock dealers until his death. His business affairs were energetically prosecuted and always characterized by the utmost reliability.
On the 29th of March, 1849, Mr. Houser was united in marriage to Miss Christina Whitney, who was born in Warren county, Ohio, September 29, 1829, and came to Shelby county with her parents, Francis and Abigail (Blanchard) Whitney. Mr. and Mrs. Houser were married in Shelby county and their union was blessed with five children. Ephraim, the eldest, now living in Piqua, married Sophia Blalock and they had two children, Lee and Flossie.
The mother died, and by his second wife, Jennie, who was a sister of his first wife, he had four children, --Clyde, Nellie, Harry and Bessie. Martin, the second son of the family, now operates the home farm. He married Annie Schoemaker, and they have two children, Wilson and Gracie. Maggie is the wife of John Brennar, who is living in Staunton township, and they have two children living, Oscar and Earl, while Harry died in infancy. Samuel married Jennie Hammond and they have two children, Forest and Edith. Abigail is the wife of Harvey Anderson, a farmer of Spring Creek township, and their children are Bertha and Annie L.
When Mr. and Mrs. Houser took up their abode upon the farm where the widow now resides it was a tract of heavy timber land, but Mr. Houser cleared away the trees, plowed the land, and in due course of time garnered abundant harvests. Their first home was a log cabin, but in later years it was replaced by a more commodious and modern residence. As the years passed by all the accessories and conveniences of the model farm were added, and the property became a very valuable one, Mr. Houser continuing the cultivation of the fields until his death. He was for thirty-eight years a consistent member of the Baptist church, and in his life exemplified his religious faith. His political support was given the Republican party, and he served as township trustee, supervisor and school director for many years, discharging his duties with marked promptness and fidelity. He died May 6, 1884, and his remains were interred in the Fletcher cemetery. In his death the community lost a valued citizen, his neighbors a faithful friend and his family a loving husband and father. Mrs. Houser is now the owner of an eighty-acre farm in Spring Creek township and also has fifty-six acres in Staunton township, so that she is well supplied with life's comforts. She, too, is a consistent and faithful member of the Baptist church, and the many excellencies of her character have gained her warm regard

Notes:
MARTIN VALENTINE HOUSER, residing on a farm of eighty acres in Staunton Township, Miami Connty, Ohio, is also the owner of several other tracts of land in that and Spring Creek Townships, having 331 acres in all. He was born on St. Valentine's Day, February 14, 1830, on the home farm in Spring Creek Township, Miami County, and is a son of John and Margaret (Booher) Houser, and a grandson of Martin and Barbara (Neff) Houser.
Martin Houser, the grandfather, was a farmer in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and some years after marriage moved to Montgomery County, Ohio, settling on the cast side of the Miami River, about two and a half miles north of Dayton, which was then a village consisting of but a few small houses. He later entered one-half a section of land in Spring Creek Township, Miami County, but continued to live at his old home near Dayton, where he died at the age of eighty-one years. He and his wife were parent, of the following children,: Jacob, Daniel, Isaac, Henry, John, Martin, Barbara and Catherine.
John Houser was born in the Shenandoah Valley, and was a small boy at the time the family moved from Virginia to the vicinity of Dayton, where he wais reared to maturity. They lived in a rude log house, and he helped in clearing the timber from the farm . When a young man, during the War of 1812, he hauled grain to the soldiers in the army. He also in that period was one of a party which went to Indiana, it being a hard six weeks trip at that time. They lost all of their horses but one on the journey, and upon their return sold the remaining horse for the munificent sum of $7.00, which was divided among the seven members of the party. After his marriage and the birth of two children, they moved to Miami County, locating upon the north half of the half section of land entered by his father, his brother Henry locating upon the south half. He lived in a small log house on the place for many years, and cleared it of timber. The country was in a comparatively wild and undeveloped state at that time, and he frequently supplied his table with wild game. He died at the age of eighty-one years, and Mrs. Houser died at the age of eighty-four. They were parents of the following: Samuel; John B.; Barbara, wife of Moses Denman; Martin Valentine; Mary Ann wife of Job Emmons; Bartholomew, who was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War and died at Washington, D.C.; and Jacob , who lost his life in the Battle of the Wilderness. The subject of this sketch is the only one of his parents' family now living.
Martin V. Houser spent his boyhood days on the home farm in Spring Creek township, which he aided in clearing. He first attended school in the old church in that vicinity, also the old log schoolhouse, and the brick school which replaced it. He received a fair education, being ambitious and a good student, and was tendered a position as teacher at different times. His educational training was restricted by illness in his youth he went on an extended hunting trip in Indiana for the benefit of his health. He covered 231 miles on horseback in six weeks, and returned home in a much improved condition. He has always followed farming, and what he owns be owes almost entirely to his individual efforts. His first purchase was the farm on which he now lives, and when the mortgage was finally removed from the place be felt himself the happiest and richest man in the community. He has always invested his earnings to good advantage, and now has 331 acres, in several tracts, in Spring Creek and Staunton Townships.
In November, 1856, Mr. Houser was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Duncan, a daughter of Robert and Jane (McClintock) Duncan, and her death occurred March 2, 1886. They became parents of two children, Ida and Flora. Ida Houser was married to Willis Peterson, of Staunton Township, and has two children Roy, who married Elsie Clark; and Ralph. Flora Houser married J Todd Small, by whom she has two children, Ray and Birdie, and they make their home with her father. Politically, Mr. Houser is a strong Prohibitionist and staunch supporter of Bryan, being the only member of the family to vote the Democratic ticket. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for many years, and has filled various church offices.

Lawrence Houser, Joseph Houser, James Houser and Mrs. Carrie Scudder, and a host of friends to mourn his loss. He was the youngest of the family of seven children, and the first to be called away. Most of his life was spent in and around Piqua, where he was a respected citizen and popular among a large circle of friends. He was a member of Piqua Tribe, No. 233, I.O.R.M. and Eagles, Piqua Aerie, No. 614 F.O.E. Almost a year ago he underwent an operation at Piqua Memorial hospital for an illness from which he never fully recovered. He was very patient throughout all his suffering, being naturally of a cheerful, sunshiny disposition, with a kind word for all with whom he came in contact. He was conscious until the last, having summoned his sister and brothers to his bedside and expressing himself as trusting in God before passing into the Great Beyond. He was a faithful husband, a loving brother and a good friend and his kind deeds and cheerful sunny disposition will ever linger in the memory of those he left behind. The funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Houser's parents, Mr. And Mrs. S. H. Cawley, on West Market street, Troy, and were conducted by the Rev. J. E. Etter. A large company assembled to pay this last tribute. A special car brought 50 Red Men and Eagles from Piqua, the pallbearers being members of those orders. They conducted their ritualistic ceremonies at the tomb. The bier was almost hidden with floral tokens. Interment at Riverside

From the book: An Illustrated History of Nobles County, Minnesota Published 1908
"Henry H Read, in whose honor the town in which he noe resides was named, is one of the pioneer settlers of Nobles County. He is a native of Mongomery County, Ohio, where he was born Feb. 17, 1851, son of Joseph E. and Czarina (Houser) Read, natives of Maryland and Ohio, respectively. Both parents are dead, the mother having passed away in 1884 and the father four years later. On his father's side Mr. Read is of German and Irish descent; on his mother's side, German.
In his native county Mr. Read lived untill he was four years of age, at which time the family moved to Pulaski county, Ind., when hat part of the state was a new and wild country. Henry Read recived his education in the Pulaski county schools, finishing with a course in a graded town school in Ohio. In the fall of 1868 the Reads moved to Shelby county, Ohio, and there our subject lived, engaged in farm work, untill April 1873. He was married in Logan county, Ohio, April 17 1873, to Eliza Catherine Hill, daughter of George and Jane (Gish) Hill. Her father died in 1894; her mother in 1905. Mrs. Read's great grandfather came to America when an infant and founded the American branch of the family. Both the parents died during the trip over, and the passengers, not knowing the family, took care of the infant and named him Hill.
After his marrieage Mr. Read moved to Worthington, arriving in that town May 2, 1873. He contested a tree clain on land upon which the village of Reading is now situated, but by reason of the grasshopper scourge changed the filing to a preemption and proved up on it. He did not at once move onto his land, but from 1873 to 1876 farmed his father's farm on Loon Lake, in Jackson county. In the last named year he took up his residence on his Summit Lake township farm, and that has been his home ever since. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Read lived in a little shack, which was without a floor and many other accommodations.
When Reading was formed in 1899, Mr. Read retired from active farm work. In the early days he served as a member of the board of supervisors of Summit Lake township three or four years, was township treasurer one term, and has held the office of director or clerk of school district No. 7 nearly all of the time he has resided in the county. Mr. Read is a member of the prohibition party and a temperance worker. It has been largely through his influence that saloons have been kept out of Reading."
