    Deed in Surry Co, NC in 1770 from James Hampton of Rowan Co, NC to John Halbert of same Co, for land in Rowan Co, NC
    John Halbert, first child of Joel Halbert and Elizabeth Frances Jones, was born 1741 in Caroline Co., Va., and died about 1820, in Lincoln Co., Tn. as his will and estate was settled Jul 22, 1821. It has been stated that John married Peggy Hill, but no record has been found to support this theory. John was married first to Mary Margaret Hampton about 1770, probably in Rowan Co., NC. Mary Margaret was born 1746, Fairfax Co., Va.

    In 1783 John Halbert was living on Town Fork and paid taxes on 234 acres of land, a negro girl named Rachel, four horses and six cattle. In 1789 Surrey Co. NC. was divided into Surrey Co. and Stokes Co. and the old county buildings being no longer suitably located for either county, John was commissioned to sell them. About this time he was also appointed one of the commissioners to lay out the town of Germantown which was to be the new county seat for Stokes County, NC.

    John served in the Revolutionary War as a Corp. in Captain Rice's Co., 11th Virginia Regt. Commanded by Colonel Daniel Morgan. He enlisted Mar 1, 1777 and his name is last found on the rolls dated Apr 6, 1778 at Valley Forge, Pa. which showed him absent on sick leave. It is believed that John first went to Tn. in 1811.

    William Anson Halbert was a Justice of the Peace. He was a Lieutenant in the Henry Co., Virginia Militia during the American Revolution. He served with Captain Henry Lee's Troop, 1st Regiment, Light Dragoons. He was a member of the Provincial Congress from Surry Co., NC in 1775 (The Compendium of American Genealogy, page 208) He was given a land grant of 486 acres of land on Russell Creek in SC, issued by Thomas Jefferson, for his service in the Revolutionary War. He had a red beard, blue eyes and was of stout build.     In the name of God Amen, I William Halbert of Pendleton District, S.C., being of perfect mind and memory, thanks to God Almighty, calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say I recommend my soul into the hands of the Almighty God that gave it, my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a decent manner at the discretion of my executers nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same by the mighty power of God, and as touching such worldly estate wherein it has pleased God to bless me with. I devise and dispose of the same in the following manner.
    First my lawful debts be paid. I also lend to my beloved wife, Elizabeth Halbert, two hundred acres of land, including the plantation whereon I now live, also my household furniture with all my stock of old Negroes and other stock of all kinds during her natural life of widowhood, Provided she should marry then she has to have one child's part, after my children is toted off with what I allow them to have at their setting out or leaving me. My will and desire is that all my children at their coming of age or marrying shall have as follows:
    I do give to my son Joel Halbert, the land I bought from Ralph Owens and Elijah Owens that he has now in his possession and two Negroes, viz Sal and Mose, with other necessaries he has in possession.
    I do give my son Enos Halbert, what land he has in his possession including the land I bought from Henry Burdin, one Negro, viz Reda with the other property he has in his possession.
    I give to my son Arthur's children, two hundred acres of land whereon he died and fifty of a tract we call Hireth to be divided between his children, viz Henry Halbert, Linda and Arthur, when they come of age.
    I do give my son James Halbert, two hundred acres of land joining that where Arthur died and running across all tracts, with one young Negro, viz Peter and all the others I gave or put in his possession.
    I do give my son William Halbert, two hundred and 32 acres of land including the mill on Big Creek and a tract of ninety acres called Datenial, one young Negro, horse, saddle and bridle, bed with stock of different kinds to begin.
    I do give my son Joshua Halbert, two hundred acres of land joining James across all tracts and one young Negro, also thirty acres and the mill shoal on Saluda I purchased from Wm Acker and at his mother's death to have the plantation she lives on with horse and saddle and bed and furniture and stock of different kinds.
    I do give my daughter Martha Grisham, two young Negroes, with what other property I gave her that she has in her possession.
    I do give my daughter Susana Acker, two young Negroes, with what other property I gave her that she has in her possession.
    I do give my daughter Franka Garrison, two young Negroes, with what other property I gave her that she has in her possession.
    I do give my daughter Elizabeth Berry, two young Negroes, with what other property I gave her that she has in her possession.

    I do give my daughter Lucinda Halbert, two young Negroes, horse, saddle, bed and furniture with stock of different kinds. I don't mean more but equal to what the rest of you had.
    I do declare that my beloved wife Elizabeth Halbert shall enjoy all my personal estate only what my children take as they become of age provided she does not destroy or diminish it during her natural life or widowhood, after her death what is remaining of the estate to be divided amongst my children, Arthur's children to have a share.
    I likewise constitute, ordain and appoint Joel Halbert, John Halbert, Enos Halbert,, and John Grisham, Executers to this my last will and testament and I do hereby disallow, revoke and disannul all and every testament, wills, legacies, bequests and executions by me in any wise before names and bequeathed but rectify and confirm this to be my last will and testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this thirteenth day of July in the year of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ one thousand eight hundred and six.

    William was a staunch Whig and served in the Revolutionary Was as a Lieutenant in the Henry County, Virginia Militia. Served with Captain Henry Lee's Troop, 1st Regiment, Light Dragoons (The Compendium of American Genealogy, First Families in America, page 334). Member of the Provincial Congress from Surrey County, North Carolina in 1775 (The Compendium of American Genealogy, page 208).

    "I certify that William HALBERT, age 40 enlisted in
    Partisan Legion for the War ans was a citizen of
    Virginia at the time of his enlistment."
    In 1786, William, Sr. HALBERT, age 42 and family moved from
    Caroline Co., VA. and settled on the "Saludia River" in the
    old Pendleton Dist, (present-day Anderson Co.) SC.

BLACKBURN - Killeen, Tex., June5-One of five events of its kind possible to be held in Texas was celebrated yesterday when the monument of Captain John Porter BLACKBURN, hero of the war of 1812, was unveiled by his descendants at BLACKBURN cemetery, four miles east of here. Mr. BLACKBURN is one of five soldiers of the war of 1812 buried in Texas. The other graves are those of Lieut. Gen. John WOOD of Austin, Channecy JOHNSON near Bastrop and Mr. NEBLETT at Navasota. A marker has been issued to Mrs. J.A. WALKER of Brownswood for one of her ancestors.

    June 4 was chosen for the occasion of erecting the bronze marker, issued by the Daughters of the War of 1812 because it is the birthday of the only living son of Mr. BLACKBURN. He is Merriweather Whitley BLACKBURN of this place who was 87 years old yesterday. This day, is also the fifty sixth birthday of Richard T. BLACKBURN, grandson of the American patriot.
    Mrs. Harry HYMAN, 617 Hammond Avenue, San Antonio, great grand daughter, was in charge of the ceremony. She displayed a cane made of palmetto which Mr. BALCKBURN had fashioned while in Florida serving during the war. She also showed a helmet which the hero wore. The helmet was fastened to the cap and bore a tall plume. On the face of the helmet at the top is the inscription "Jackson's Guard." Beneath is a cluster of stars representing the states. Under the star is a spread eagle carrying in its beak a banner on which is written: "Liberty, Union and Independence."

    The Rev. W. J. MAYHEW, Killeen gave a brief history of the war of 1812 and Miss Guton GRIFFIS of Baylor College, Belton represented the Agnes WOODSON chapter of the D.A.R. After these talks Mrs. HYMAN gave a history of the captain's life.

    John Porter BLACKBURN was born in 1786 in North Carolina but later moved to Tennessee. It was while in Tennessee that he was made captain in Jackson's Guard. In 1851 he moved to Texas, coming through in wagons, bringing all his negroes and settling in Bell County. He was a farmer and bought the land which is in the possession of his descendants. The site of his home, a double log cabin, is a quarter of a mile from the cemetery where he is buried, and the trees and roses which he planted are still living. About ten feet from the foot of Captain BLACKBURN'S grave is the grave of his negro body servant who followed him throughout the war.

    One child, six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren were present. The grandchildren are: R.T. POLK, R.T. BLACKBURN, Miss Alice BLACKBURN, Mrs. Fannie McCORCLE, Mrs. Ida FRY and Mrs. M.D.GILLILAND of Killeen. The great grandchildren are: Miss Annie FRY and Gid McCORCLE of Killeen, and Mrs. Lila BIRD, Mrs. Ada SMITH, Jim ROBERTSON, Will ROBERTSON, Miss Charlie ROBERTSON< Miss Eva Lee ROBERTSON, Miss Alice ROBERTSON of Granger, and Mrs. Harry HYMAN of San Antonio.The great great grandchildren range in age from six year to seven months.

    Earliest spelling of the name was Halbert. This family seems to eventually
    have used the Holbert spelling, as is shown is numerous records, especially of
    the later ones. Was in Fentress Co., Tn, by 1827 and in 1830/1840 c ensuses.
    Moved to Fentress Co., Tenn by about 1827, and settled on Crooked Creek near
    Little Crab, west of Jamestown.

    It has been difficult to reconstruct his family. The 1800, 1810 an d 1820
    censuses of Knox and Anderson Cos., Tn are missing. By 1830 he had at least
    one child, Mary, married, and perhaps more than one. By 1850 several children
    were married and with daughters, it has been difficult to identify them.

    In 1850, sons Jeremiah and John and daughters Caroline, Elizabeth and Naomi
    (Oma) were living in Posey Co., Ind. A Jeremiah Barlow in his household in1850, age 5, may have a grandson. A John Barlow, age 27. was i n son John
    Holbert's household, age 27, in 1850, and in 1860 a Jerry Barlow age 15 was
    living with John. Also with Joel and Zelphia in 1850 was Mary Bruce , age 7,
    possibly a granddaughter.

    The marriage records of Jeremiah, Naomi (called Oma in mar record,)
    Caroline and Elizabeth are found in Posey Co.

    Some possible children may be Margaret Mullinix, wife of Nathan Mullinix, in
    Fentress Co., Tn. Also, Louisa Beaty, wife of Andrew Beaty, living next to
    Nathan Mullinix in 1850, could possibly be a daughter. Daughters may have
    married a Barlow and Bruce. More research needed.

    William Halbert Jr. was granted 1292 acres in Laurens Dist., SC. on Durbin's Creek, a branch of the Enroee River. Being unsuccessful in farming and milling, he sold his property in SC. and took up residence for a short time in Ga.
    After living in Ga. for only a couple of years, he and all of his children, except Harriet and Hannah moved to Mo. near William's older brother James Ira Halbert Sr. in Meremac Twp., Crawford Co., Mo. At this time nothing further is known about the families of either of his wives, but there is strong evidence that Elizabeth was related to the Peter Bowen
    family of SC. Several Halbert members married into this family and his descendants are found
