    Notes:

Sprague Families in America", by Dr. Warren Vincent Sprague, page 65.
Parmenas Sprague served in the War of 1812; lived as a farmer at Ira, NY.

From Virginia Sprague Webster, correspondent. One discrepancy here: His tombstone states that he died 11 June 1871 and on p. 2 of "Hannibal History", it says, "Parmenus died on June 11, 1871 and is buried alongside his wives in the small rural cemetery in Bethel". This is the old Sprague burying ground.

From Marilyn Owen, correspondent. He is on the 1855 NY State census for Cayuga Co., age 73, born in CT. His 3rd wife Christina, is age 57, born in Saratoga Co., NY. Dolston Sprague [a son by wife #2, Mary Potter], is in the home, age 36, born in Cayuga Co. His occupation is "insurance agent". Living next door is Parmenus' and Christina's son, C.B. Sprague, with his wife and baby daughter. On the 1865 NY state census, Parmenus & Christina are living with their son, C. Burton Sprague and family. Parmenus is age 83; Christina is age 58. Parmenus died in 1871 and is buried in the Bethel Cemetery, in Hannibal, Oswego County, on land which belonged to his father, Thomas Sprague. Parmenus' monument is large and imposing. All three of his wives are buried near him.

Prudence' eldest child, daughter Ellen Cogswell Sturge Dallas, kept a diary for many years. An entry for July 1, 1891 says: ". . .Clara and Hattie watched Mother during the night. When I want down stairs at 5:30 went immediately to Mother's bedside. Saw there was a change in her appearance for the worse. Told Clara so, & she immediately sent word to brother Ed. He and Ann came down; stayed during the day. We watched by her bedside trying to do for & administer to her relief until 4 p.m. when she quietly breathed her last, surrounded by her children & all of her grandchildren. . .weather hot. Thermometer 112." July 2. ". . .Chand & I went to Modesto to make necessary arrangements for the funeral of our mother. . .Went to the cemetery. Selected a lot in the western part in the gounds set apart for the Masons & their families." July 3 "Undertaker Phelps came with hearse about 4:30 a.m. Mother was then dressed by loving hands & laid in the coffin. About 6:30 friends & neighbors commenced coming in. Mr. Finley read a chapter from the Bible & he & other friends sang 'Shall we meet beyond the river', which was one of the favorite songs our mother delighted to hear. Also sang 'Nearer my God to thee'. Soon after singing the last we started on our mounful way to Modesto. Were met near Modesto by the Rev. Page who conducted the ceremonies at the cemetery. Friends sang the song commencing 'Jesus Lover of my Soul' with saddening effect & our mother was laid in her last resting place to await the Resurrection Morn."

My Dear Ellen Your kind letter informing me of your change of residence came to hand yesterday. I was glad to hear of the general good health of our Stanislaus* friends. I went to Stockton on Sunday 8th inst. and of course I went to your old home the first thing, but before I reached the door something seemed to say to me, Ellen is not here. When I found you had really gone I assure you I felt lonesome, for I had expected to find you there. After residing so long in the city and having so much company you must feel lonely in such an out of the way place as Waterford. But you need not be confined there. You can go when and where you please and I hope you will please to visit us occasionally. Our folks are all well and all seem comparatively happy escept myself. I have the blues sometimes when business in dull but try to conceal my feelings.
It will always be more convenient for you to visit us then for us to visit you. I have no news to write, except that George Potter** and wife from Michigan made us a short visit not long since. They left the Michigan People well, but they report Ruth and Semantha*** failing rapidly. Ruth insisted upon their visiting Corydon. They asked her if she desired to send any word; she answered, Yes. Tell him to seek Salvation. So you see what is uppermost in her mind.
Write often and visit us frequently. Your old uncle
    Coe
Love to all the family, especially to Sister Prudy****.

    ****Prudence Sprague Cogswell, Corydon's half-sister.

Woodland, November 23th 1883 Dear Ellen, It is not because I have any news to write, but because I am anxious to know how you are getting along in the settlement of Mr. Dallas'* Estate , how your health is, how you are situated, how your mother's health is and how the boys are getting along. We are all well and about as comfortable as could be expected in anticipation of the incoming administration of that great and good man, Grover Cleavland. Mother Sibley** is as healthy as she ever was in her life. Charlotte*** is at home working as hard as ever and scolding me about over a week for not writing to you or visiting you. Frank**** at the last election was elected District Attorney, his salary twenty-five hundred dollars a year, and he ought [I should think] to be able to live on that. Ellen**** is at home with all her odities as usual. Fred**** graduated in the public school last Spring and is now attending college, is a faithful student and expects to graduate in two years. Well, about Chand***** and Ed*****. I suppose if they wanted to see me they would either come and see me or let me know so that I could go and see them. Has your mother****** got back to Stockton? If she is there let me know it and I will come and see her almost any day. Now I have written enough to let you know what I want you to write about, and if you are able I wish you would write immediately. Charlotte sends her respects and I am your affectionate Uncle, C. P. Sprague

Dear Ellen, Your letter, informing me of Clara's* death, written on the 25th ult. for some reason did not reach me until the morning of the 29th, the day after Clara's funeral. The sad news of your family sickness and of Clara's death, together with my foolish forebodings regarding my own affairs disqualified me to answer your letter at once. I, of course had only a limited acquaintance, made upon me a very favorable impression and to me, her children seemed to possess more than average intelligence and domestic felicity. When I think of Chandley it is generally as a young man, and it is hard for me to realize that he is a man about 75 years old; his loss is irreparable and though I can sincerely sympathise with him, I can in no way comfort him. You too must be lonely and will miss the society to which you have long been accustomed. Ellen we are not GETTING old, we are ALREADY old, but it would not be philosophical, sorrowfully to lament that our time is nearly spent; yet as unseasonable as that would be, I must admit that I am rather a disconsolate old man.
There was a time when I think I had many friends whom I cherished but
    "They have passed away.
"The fair in form, the pure in mind
"And like a sticken deer I stray,
"When all are stange and none are kind." Frank** has been with us ever since last September. Very soon after we left Shasta County he was taken sick and was in a private hospital and under a Dr.'s care and that of a private nurse most of the time from February to September. After he came down here his health seemed to improve for a time, but he in the dark fell down stairs and I think permanently injured his back and has not since been able to do anything. Fred** did not seem to be successful in establishing a practice in San Francisco. He has now gone to Sonoma where his prospects seem to be quite flattering. Charlotte*** and Ellen** are as well as usual. I used to think I did very well at letter writing and really enjoyed, but now everything is awkward, and it seems to me I can write nothing of interest, but I think if we were so situated that we could visit each other frequently, our declining days would be more pleasantly spent. Remember me kindly to Chand**** and Ed**** and the rest. Write again and i will try to summon more courage to reply.
    Affectionately
    C.T. Sprague

«b» CEVASTIAN BURTON SPRAGUE «/b» C. BURTON SPRAGUE was born in Ira November 5th, 1830. He is the youngest child of Parmenas and Christina Sprague. His father was born in Saratoga county October 18th, 1781. His father was married three times. His first wife, Rebecca Nobles, was born February 19th, 1787. They married February 14th, 1804. She died December 2d, 1807. By this wife he had three daughters. His second wife, Mary A. Potter, was born July 4th, 1787; married April 30th, 1809. She died October 9th, 1828. By her he had seven children- five girls and two boys. His third wife, Christina, was born November 12th, 1796. They were married December 17th, 1829. She died November 13th, 1873. The subject of this sketch is the result of this union. His father came to this County about the year 1806, and settled on lot 20 in the town of Ira. He purchased 100 acres of land and resided upon it until his death, which occurred June 11th, 1871, at the advanced age of nearly ninety years. C. B. Sprague lived at home with his father until he was seventeen years old; then worked out two years by the month. He attended the district school till he was fourteen, and after that time had no schooling except three terms that he attended in the Academy at Red Creek, Wayne county, when he was twenty years of age. He then taught school two winters. After that he worked land on shares and burned lime. Then he purchased the old homestead of his brother, at that time containing forty-eight acres of land, and in addition to that fifty acres adjoining. He has added from time to time by purchase till now his farm contains 146 acres. He is still residing on that place. October 16th, 1853, he married Miss Elizabeth D. Campbell, daughter of William and Polly Campbell, of the village of Cato. There have been born to them four children, three of whom are living, as follows: Emma L., born January 9th, 1855; Clara E., born January 31st, 1859; and Willie Burt, born February 5th, 1869. In politics Mr. Sprague is a staunch Republican. He is a member of the Baptist church in Ira, was clerk of that church for many years, and for eleven years was the Superintendent of its Sunday school. Mr. Sprague has been successful in life, notwithstanding that for many years he has been afflicted with a partial failure of his eye sight. He is a self-made man, and all that he is or has in this world he owes to his own energy and talents. A view of his beautiful home may be seen on another page of this work.

Her first husband, Francis died of small pox on January 27, 1869, and his wife, Ellen had only the doctor to help her bury her husband, since everyone else was too filled with dread of the disease, to come near. Twenty years later on January 27, 1889, Ellen wrote in her diary: "Since the frost melted, the day has been warm & lovely. So unlike this day twenty years ago when dark clouds, sleet and a bleak wind swept the plain, fit emblem for what was passing in my home and heart as we laid my first love to his long, last rest, near the banks of the Tuolumne River at Empire City."

Ellen had no children by either marriage. She and her first husband, Francis Sturge, of Ira, Cayuga Co., NY, came to the California Gold Rush in 1850, taking passage on a ship around Cape Horn.

Name given as "Frances L." at the age of four months on the 1855 State Census of New York for Cayuga Co.

From Sue Ricketson, correspondent, note of December 9th, 2003 I would like to inform you that I have located the1884 NY (I believe City) marriage license of Emma Lillian Sprague born, according to your data base, on January 9, 1855) (about 7th or 8th descendant of 01 Francis Sprague) and Charles W Clark. This is a fairly large certificate.
I also have access to three 16x20 portraits on hardback paper that allows them to stand up without folding. There is one for Emma Lillian Sprague (age 28-29); Charles W Clark (age 39); and one of "Uncle Will" on back with the name of person I believe may have owned these pictures (Mrs. E. D. Sprague).
Emma L Sprague's parents according to your data base are Cevastian Burton Sprague (1830-1901) and Elizabeth D Campbell (1830-1901). I believe this Elizabeth D Campell may be the E D Sprague named on the back of "Uncle Will"s picture.
There is also another marriage certificate for Almon C. Chase and Mabel Clark (maybe daughter of Charles and Emma??) dated 1908 Hannibal, NY.
I have no connection with either the Sprague family or the Clark family (as far as I know). I would just like to have these go to some family member who would enjoy having them and can use them as basis of proof. The one picture of "Uncle Will" is deterioting fast, but with careful attention and a frame I think it can be saved for the most part. The others are going to begin deterioting before long.
These pictures and certificates are in an antique shop. I will be glad to get them if anyone wants them, but I will need to know as soon as possible. If my memory serves me correctly, the portraits are 14 dollars apiece (which is high for "Uncle Will" especially, but maybe they'll go down on it.) I think the certificates were 7 or 8 dollars apiece. I would not mind buying them and sending them for what they cost me plus mailing or sending costs if any one is interested.

Emma — Charles W Clark. [Group Sheet]
