    AGED WENONA CITIZEN SUMMONED BY DEATH

    George Gibson, Retired Rural Mail Carrier, Passed Away Thursday.

    George D. Gibson, a resident of Wenona for approximately 40 years, died at his home in this city Thursday night after a period of declining health which covered several months. He was born at Danvers, Illinois, September 1, 1853 (other records say 1854 or 1855). He was 86 years, 6 months and 9 days old.

    In 1874 he married Jennie M. Smith of Streator. For a time they lived in Nebraska, and then returned to Illinois, locating here in 1899. Three sons born to this union are Harry Gibson, LaSalle; Albert Gibson, Hutchinson, Kansas; and the third son lives at Manchester, Washington. There are 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

    Mr. Gibson was a rural route mail carrier and remained in that service until pensioned some ten or fifteen years ago.

    Funeral services were held at the Thierry Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock. Burial was made at Stanford, Illinois. Rev. Kauffroch of the Presbyterian church, officiated. Six grandsons served as casket bearers.

    Husband of Corinne, father of five - four sons and a daughter - Frank worked primarily as a carpenter throughout the Hutchinson area. He also was a truck driver and worked at the "Strawboard" among other jobs. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe with the U.S. Army.

    He often took on extra jobs after hours, often for those - family or not - who needed a person they could trust to get the job done and done right.

    He was known for sharing his skills and knowledge with the younger guys on the job, and helping them to grow in their own skills.

    He also volunteered his expertise for church and civic organizations and found the time to support his children's pursuits.

    Sarah "Sue" "Mom" Hughes, 88, died Sept. 11, 2009. She was born May 25, 1921, the daughter of Albert and Phoebe James Gibson. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1939 and attended Hutchinson JUCO. A longtime Hutchinson resident, she had worked for Baize and Sons Jewelry, was the manager for the Emporium and retired from Dillard's at the age of 83.

    She was a member of First Church of God, where she and her husband were youth sponsors for many years. She was also a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary Unit #68, both the Kansas and National Electronic Associations and was a Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corp Alumni.

    On Oct. 12, 1943, she married Emmett W. Hughes in Lyons, Kan. He died April 5, 1975. Survivors include: four children, Barbara Clendening, Jack Emmett Hughes Sr., Jill Crank and husband Ted, all of Hutchinson, and Michael Kent Hughes and wife Lisa, of Hilliard, Ohio; two brothers, Robert Gibson and wife Shirley, of Des Moines, Iowa, Gene Gibson and wife Norma of Rogers, Ark.; two sisters, Ina Harper and husband Ray, Mary Newton and husband Jesse, both of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Dar Holden and wife Kay, Jack Emmett Hughes Jr., both of Hutchinson, Julia Hughes, of Ontario, Calif., Jennifer Hughes, of Independence, Mo., and Staff Sgt. Norman Ich II and wife Sadie, of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, who is deployed with the 95th Sapper Engineers in Iraq. She leaves behind many friends, loved ones and Sky Ryders who considered her "Mom."

    She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, Fern Stoughton, Marie Rodgers, Sophia Baize, Phebe Jennings, two brothers, Frank Gibson and an infant brother.

    Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor John Carney presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Memorials can be sent to First Church Of God, Hutch-inson Community College or Hospice and Homecare of Reno County, in care of the mortuary. The family wishes to acknowledge Hospice and Homecare of Reno County for giving them the help to allow their mother to die with dignity.

    Phebe E. Jennings, 84, of Hutchinson, died Sunday June 14, 2009, at the Heartland Haven Nursing Home near Inman.

    She was born in Grant Township, Reno County, near Hutchinson on April 28, 1925, the daughter of Albert and Phebe E. James Gibson. She was a homemaker and had worked at Winchester Packing Co. for 27 years, retiring in 1983. She attended Hutchinson schools.

    She was a member of the First Church of God, the Silver Leaf Chapter No. 464 Order of Eastern Star, and the AFL/CIO Amalgamated Meat Cutter and Butcher Workman of North America.

    She married Theodore V. "Ted" Jennings Sr. on September 25, 1942, in Hutchinson. He died October 12, 1995.

    Survivors include a grandson, David Wayne Jennings, Hutchinson; a granddaughter, Syna Barbara Gustason and her husband Chris, Moundridge; two brothers, Robert Gibson, Des Moines, Iowa, and Eugene Gibson, Rogers, Arkansas; three sisters, Sarah Hughes, Mary Newton and Ina Harper, all of Hutchinson; six great-grandchildren, Courtney and Amber Jennings, Trevor Griffin, Haden, Darius, and Dayton Gustason. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Theodore Jennings, Jr. on April 19, 1997, one brother and three sisters.

    Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in the Fairlawn Burial Park. Mrs. Jennings will lie in state Tuesday from 1 to 9 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.

    Eugene A. Gibson, 78 of Rogers, passed away October 16, 2010 in Bentonville. Mr. Gibson was born February 6, 1931 in Midway, Kansas the son of Albert Gibson and Phebe James Gibson. He was a mechanic for GTE attended the Chapel on the Creeks and was a member of the 11th Airborne.

    He is survived by his wife Norma Fenton Gibson of the home; his children Robbie Stansberry of Rogers; Bradley Gibson and wife Sandra of Bullhead City, Arizona and Tyson Gibson of the home; his brother Robert Gibson and wife Shirley of Des Moines, Iowa; sisters Mary Newton and husband Jess and Ina Harper and husband Ray all of Hutchinson, Kansas; 7 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

    Graveside services with military honors will be 11:00a.m., Thursday; October 21, 2010 at the National Cemetery in Fayetteville with Rev. Ben Rowell officiating. Arrangements by Benton County Funeral Home (downtown) Rogers.
