John Wilmer Hicks was born near Richmond, Virginia June 1 1848.

He Enlisted in the service during the Civil War when he was 15 years old, taking his fathers place. He served for two years with a Virginia outfit under General Lee and took part in many battles of the war.

He came to Missouri with his parents in 1868.He received his education in a log school house and had always lived on a farm.

On March 21, 1869, he married Mattie Nora Hughes of Randolph, Missouri, at the residence of Robert Turner (her stepfather) by Elder James Bradley. Mattie was born October 14, 1848 near Thomas Hill and was the only child of Fleming and Mary A (Hicks) Hughes. Fleming and Mary A were married December 28, 1847. Fleming was born in Virginia and was among the earliest settlers of Chariton County, Missouri. He was a painter and a decorator by trade and lived at Glasgow untill after his marriage to Mary. Mattie's father died around 1848/1849 and is buried in Brunswick City Cemetery at Brunswick, Missouri (I was told, but I looked through that whole cemetery and found no headstone for him, nor any record at the city hall). Mary later married Robert M Turner and they had ten children together.

After eight years of renting land, John bought a farm in Musselfork township. He raised shorthorn cattle, Poland China hogs, horses and mules. Mattie raised white leghorn chickens.

John died March 8, 1927 at his home (where he had lived for 50 years) in Chariton County, Missouri at the age of 78. Mattie died June 29, 1929 at the home of a nephew, Will Turner, near Prairie Hill, Missouri.

John W. Hicks, a pioneer settler, died at his home near Pat, Mo., Tuesday, aged 78 years, 9 months and 7 days. Funeral services were conducted at White Oak church, Thursday afternoon. Interment at Locke Cemetery.

THE PASSING OF J.W. HICKS

J.W. Hicks passed away on Tuesday morning, March 8, 1927, at his home twelve miles north of Keytesville, where he had lived for fifty years.

He had been in failing health the past two years.

J.W. Hicks was the son of Josiah and Dreucilla Hicks and was born near Richmond, Virginia, June 1, 1848. He came to Missouri in the year of 1858. He served in the war at the age of 15 years under General Lee.

He was united in marriage to Mattie Hughes, March 21, 1869. To their union ten children were born, all of whom are living except two who passed away several years ago, leaving to mourn his departure, his widow the eight children, 30 grand children and 16 great grand children.

Those of the immediate family are Wallace, of the home address, Bruce of Marceline, Mrs. Willis Ball, Dunegan, Mo.; Mrs. Babe Grubbs, Musselfork, Mo.; Mrs. Wayne Thompson, and Robert both of Marceline, and George of Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Sears, March 10th at White Oak church, and in the presence of a large crowd of friends and loved ones he was laid to rest in the Locke Cemetery.

Services for Bruce Hicks
Were at Siloam Chapel

Funeral services for Bruce W. Hicks were Tuesday afternoon at Siloam Chapel, conducted by the Rev. E. H. Hill of Mendon, pastor of the Methodist church there. Mr. Hicks died Friday at the home of a son. The pallbearers were grandsons. Burial was at Siloam Chapel cemetery.

Bruce W. Hicks, son of John and Mattie Hughes Hicks, was born January 4, 1872 near Thomas Hill in Randolph County. He and Nora Minich were married January 15,1893 and four children were born,to this union. His parents moved to Musselfork Township when he was two years of age where he lived the remainder of his life. Mrs. Hicks died January 24, 1903 and a son, Virgil, preceded him in death. Four sisters and a brother, Mrs. Malissa Coy, Mrs. Patricia Ball, Molly, and Ada Hicks and Wallace, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Hicks leaves a daughter, Sylva Littrell of Mendon; two sons, Victor of this city and Curtis of Sparks, Nev.; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Thompson and Mrs. Addie Fisher, both of Marceline; two brothers, Robert of Marceline and George of Des Moines, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.

Opal Esther Thompson was born 25 Sep 1903 in Chariton County, Missouri. On 30 June 1919 she married Frank Edward Oldham who was born 29 June 1900 and was the son of Marion Goodman Oldham “Goodie” and Junettie Spencer “Nettie”, farmers in Chariton County, southeast of Marceline, Missouri.
Frank passed away 7 January 1935 at Putman Memorial Hospital, Marceline, Missouri after a long illness with cancer at the age of 34 Years. Opal Esther passed away 19 February 1969 at St. Francis Hospital, Marceline, Missouri at the age of 65. She had had a heart attack much earlier and also a high hernia and was given the wrong shot by a doctor that was on call at the time who did not know her medical history. She was buried on 22 February 1969.
Opal Esther retired from Walsworth Yearbooks in Marceline on her birthday, 25 September 1968, but had returned to work at the beginning of 1969. Opal was well-known and well-liked. She had the largest funeral that had ever been held in Marceline at that time. Both are buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Marceline, Missouri.

Her parents were Luther F Pore and Anna Ruth Helms. Raymond and Hazel were married at the First Baptist Church in Marceline, Missouri by Reverend H.H. McLeod.
Raymond served in the Navy during WWII. He died 22 May 1973 at Pershing Memorial Hospital in Brookfield, Missouri. Hazel died 2 March 1997. They are both buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Marceline, Missouri.

* Mr. McINNIS. Mr. Speaker, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Walter Wayne Thompson Jr. and thank him for his service to this country. Walter began his service as a sailor in 1941, joining the Navy at the age of eighteen. By the end of his service, Walter had served on two ships involved in several famous and infamous battles in the Pacific theater.
* Walter served on the U.S.S. Hornet as a stenographer to the ship's Captain While serving on the ship, Wayne was present for the launching of the famous Doolittle Raid, America's first strike at the Japanese after Pearl Harbor. Following the raid, the Hornet engaged in the Battle of Midway, a battle considered a turning point in the war that stopped the Japanese fleet from controlling Hawaii.
* Following Midway, the Japanese focused on the island of Guadalcanal. Here the Hornet's crew found itself tasked with the role of defending the island alone after Allied naval forces sustained heavy losses. After Guadalcanal, the crew fought in the Battle of Santa Cruz in an attempt to weaken Japanese defensive forces for an invasion of the island.
* The Battle of Santa Cruz was to be the final engagement for the Hornet. The carrier was attacked and sunk by enemy forces and her crew rescued by the U.S.S. Anderson. After living through the travesty, Wayne finished his service aboard the U.S.S. Lexington, where he served until the end of the war. Following his discharge, he returned to his native state of Missouri and became a Baptist Minister. He served the ministry for over forty years before retiring in Montrose, Colorado.
* Mr. Speaker, it is a great privilege to recognize Walter Wayne Thompson Jr. and thank him for his service during World War II. If not for dedicated citizens like Wayne, we would not enjoy the many freedoms we have today. Wayne Thompson served selflessly in a time of great need, bringing credit to himself and to this great nation. -

had lived in this area 61 years. Mrs. Price was a sales clerk for the
Reynolds Jewelry Store for five years and the Connor Jewelry Store for
three years before she retired. She was a member of the Argentine
Baptist Church. She was a member of the auxiliaries of the National
Association of Retired and Veterans Railway Employees and the American
Legion. She leaves two sons, George A. Price, Greensburg, Ky., and
Robert L. Price, Springfield, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Hamm, Little
Rock, Ark.; a brother, Thomas Coy, Coral Gables, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs.

Shirley was employed for many years with the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder's Office in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is survived by two children, Candy Markum of Hanna, Wyoming; and Debbie Patterson of Brighton, Colorado; sister Sharon Thompson, Kansas City, Missouri; six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, May 15, 2009 at Delaney Funeral Home in Marceline with Rev. David Gouge officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Marceline. Visitation will be held Friday from 1pm until time of services at the funeral home.
