Notes - Jan 13, 1837 Mt. Pleasant, Iowa:
The FIRST ELECTION for county officers ever held in this county, took place on the 13th day of January, 1837, at which Robert Caulk, Samuel Brazelton and George J. Sharp, were elected county commissioners; Dayton C. Roberts, county treasurer, and John Riddle, coroner. N.M. Scott, H.M. Synder, Richard Childers, Levi Smith and William Stout were elected constables. Sheriffs and justices of the peace were appointed by the Governor. William D. Brown was the first sheriff; and Samuel Nelson, George Moffett and Abraham C. Dover were among the first justices of the peace.
The first District Court in the county was held in a rickety log cabin, on the west side of the public square, in Mt. Pleasant, April 14th, 1837, the Hon. David Irvin, of Wisconsin, presiding, the Hon. W.W. Chapman, acting as the United States District Attorney, and Dr. Jesse D. Payne asking as clerk. A Grand Jury was duly impaneled, composed of the following persons: Claybourne Jones, sen., Samuel Heaton, Marshall Saunders, C.W. Hughes, D.C. Roberts, Wm. W. Morrow, James McCoy, K.T. Maulding, Benjamin F. Hutton, Jacob Burge, Moses Shirley, W.J. Sowell, Thomas Clarke, Wm. King, David Minter, James Williford, sen., G.W. Lewis, Henry Synder, sen., Berry Joines, Little Hughes, John H. Randoplh, Presley Saunders and Warren L. Jenkins - John H. Randolph, acting as foreman.
Taken from "The 100th Anniversary of Mt. Pleasant Lodge No. 8" - Written by C.W. Cruikshank:
In his search for a location in the Black Hawk purchase, Presley Saunders was accompanied by his nephew, Mr. Levi Smith, who was the grandfather of the late Mrs. Henry Traut of this city. From a letter to Mr. Traut, under date of Dec. 17, 1943, from Dr. H.C. Smith, Glendale, Calif., a cousin of Mrs. Henry Traut and likewise a grandson of Levi Smith, I am pleased to submit the following: "In 1833, he (Levi Smith) and Presley Saunders, his uncle, joined a wagon train at Springfield, Ill., for the West. For some reason, Presley Saunders and grandad (Levi) left the wagon train at Farmington, Ia., and started across country looking for land. Presley found the spring in the grove that is now Saunder's Park and staked out his claim. Granddad went on out north (Itbelieve) ?? and settled on some lane -- Scott's land as I remember it. The bleakness of the winter drove him from there down to the timber south of town where he could get shelter, lumber, and firewood.
